An Era of Cybersecurity: Building for Excellence

Posted on Apr 09, 2025

In an era where cyber threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated, cybersecurity audits have emerged as a critical component of an organization’s defense strategy. These audits thoroughly evaluate an organization’s information systems, policies, and procedures to ensure they meet established security standards and best practices.

Recently, Engie facilities at the University of Iowa underwent a cybersecurity audit conducted by an international audit team. We are pleased to report a final score of 90.5%!  While there is always room for improvement, this above average rating demonstrates the solid foundation Team Iowa has established as we move forward. What started as a humble metering shop is now a multidisciplinary team of utilities, control system, cybersecurity, and network professionals responsible for maintaining over 70 miles of fiberoptic cable essential for delivering district heating and cooling, clean water, and electricity to the University of Iowa. Cybersecurity will continue to be a top priority for Team Iowa, allowing us to protect our physical and digital assets.

What Makes Team Iowa Uniquely Capable?

“What truly makes the University of Iowa site best-in-class is its “Secure-by-Design,” ground-up approach to cybersecurity and its utilization of a state-of-the-art cloud to ensure reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety of its systems,” Team Iowa’s cybersecurity analyst, Craig Davis said.  Recently, Team Iowa appointed a dedicated local compliance officer, which also demonstrates the site’s priority and commitment to cybersecurity that is unique amongst Engie North America Energy Solutions sites.

Paul Robinson, CEO of the University of Iowa Energy Collaborative, LLC (UIEC), which oversees the public- private partnership (P3) with the university in the operations, management, and recapitalization of its utilities infrastructure stated, “It is clear to me in my short time here that a tremendous pool of talent and expertise resides within Team Iowa, and we must leverage them to the maximum extent possible to protect the infrastructure against potential threats, especially at the operational technology level. I see this extraordinary and passionate team of individuals as an inherent strategic capability we must build and nurture, as these efforts will have a direct bearing on integrated and progressive utility and energy solutions. I look forward to working with our local team, the university, and our Engie North America staff to drive excellence and make this capability a leader in the space.”

Why Audits Matter?

These annual audits are crucial benchmarks for our team.  They help us identify vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, ensure regulatory compliance, mitigate physical and financial risks, and ultimately foster a  culture of security for our systems and employees. By conducting regular audits, organizations like Engie can stay ahead of cyber threats and maintain a strong security posture.

Congratulations to Team Iowa on their strong performance!
